5 Common March Budget Categories
After a long and cold winter, March brings a taste of spring! The change in seasons will also change up your budget a little. As you are setting up your March budget, here are 5 common expenses to consider.
1. St. Patrick’s Day
Do you plan anything special for St. Patrick’s Day? Fun activity or a special dinner? If so then adjust your food and/or entertainment budget accordingly.
2. Tax Services and Fees
I am a self proclaimed procrastinator but one thing we don’t wait on is completing our taxes. Why would I want to wait to get my money back? If you have to owe taxes then I can see why you would want to wait, but everyone can still plan for the filing fees or accountant fees.
If you haven’t done so already, save yourself the stress in April and get your taxes filed in March.
We use TurboTax every year. It’s super easy and you don’t have to be tech or tax savvy. They ask you different questions and walk you through different prompts to be sure you have all your information.
My new favorite feature is how I uploaded our tax documents. Instead of downloading from our accounts and uploading back into their system, I used a QR code they displayed on my computer screen. That brought up a camera to take a picture of my document with my phone. Then it instantly uploaded to my TurboTax account! No additional app needed!
If you haven’t tried TurboTax yet and want to file your taxes yourself this year, then sign up with my TurboTax referral code. It will save you 20% on your federal return filing fees!
3. Gardening and Outdoor Supplies
Do you have a green thumb?
I don’t, but my husband does. He is anxious for the weather to warm up so he can get the garden going. But until then he starts his garden operation in the basement with shelves and lights.
4. Spring and Summer Clothing
Bring on the shorts and flip flops! This is a great time to purge clothing for kids since they will most likely grow out of their winter clothes by next season.
It’s also a great time to purge your own closet to make room for spring and summer clothes.
5. Spring Sports Registration
Yay for spring sports! As my kids are getting older and trying different activities I am learning that sports registration fees are not cheap!
This can also be a great learning opportunity to teach your kids how to earn and save money. Last year my daughter wanted to play fall soccer. We challenged her to earn her registration fees (she was 9 at the time). We had lots of flowers in the backyard (from my husband’s prosperous garden) and she set up a flower and lemonade stand at my parents’ house one Sunday afternoon and I shared online for local friends.
She surpassed her goal and it gave her motivation to set new money goals.
Bonus Category for 2024
I almost forgot that Easter is on March 31st this year! I’m sure you have seen all the Easter decor and candy in the stores already. There may also be some extra local events that you like to attend to as well.
